How Invisalign Works
Invisalign uses a series of clear, removable trays to move your teeth into position, with no metal brackets and no wires. It works for adults who never got treatment the first time around, for teenagers who would rather not wear visible braces, and for plenty of cases people assume are too complicated for aligners.
Our Lake Oswego office sees patients from across the area, and Dr. Delplanche builds every plan around the specific case rather than a standard protocol. Here is what treatment actually involves, who it suits and where it is not the right answer.
Discreet and Comfortable to Wear
Invisalign uses clear plastic trays, which makes them close to invisible in normal conversation. For teenagers worried about how they look at school, and for adults who would rather keep treatment quiet at work, that matters.
The aligners are made from smooth, BPA-free plastic, so they are comfortable to wear. There are no brackets to irritate the inside of the mouth and no wires to poke sensitive gums, which is often the deciding factor for anyone who has worn metal braces before.
Eating and Brushing Stay Simple
You take the aligners out to eat and to brush, so nothing is off the menu. Sticky treats, popcorn and crunchy snacks are all fine, which is a real difference from braces.
Brushing and flossing stay exactly as they were. No threading floss around wires, no special tools. That usually means better gum health over the course of treatment, particularly for younger patients still building the habit.
Fewer Appointments
Invisalign needs fewer in-office visits than braces. Most appointments are a progress check and a new set of trays, which takes less chair time than tightening wires or replacing brackets.
The trays also come out for sports and for playing wind instruments, so treatment does not interfere with the rest of someone's week. For families juggling activities, or adults who travel for work, that flexibility is often what settles the decision.
What Invisalign Can and Cannot Correct
The Invisalign system is not only for mild cases. It handles overcrowding, gaps, overbites, underbites and crossbites, and 3D imaging lets you see a preview of the finished result before anything starts.
There are limits, though. Severe bite problems, significant jaw discrepancies and some tooth rotations still respond better to fixed braces, and a small number of cases need a combination of both. If aligners are not the right tool for your case, we will say so and walk you through the other orthodontic options available in Lake Oswego rather than starting something that will not finish the job.
The Confidence Side of It
A straighter smile changes how people carry themselves, and because the aligners are barely noticeable, that shift starts during treatment instead of at the end of it. Teenagers stop covering their mouths in photos. Adults stop thinking about it in meetings.
Lake Oswego Invisalign FAQs
Lake Oswego Invisalign FAQs
How long does Invisalign treatment take?
Treatment time varies with the case, but most are finished within 12 to 18 months. Simple spacing corrections often run shorter. You get a realistic estimate at your consultation, once we have taken records and know what we are working with.
How often will I need to come in?
Roughly every six to eight weeks. Those appointments are a progress check and a handover of your next sets of trays, so they are short compared with a braces adjustment.
Do I have to wear the aligners all day?
They need 20 to 22 hours a day to work, which leaves time to take them out for meals and for brushing. Falling short of that regularly is the most common reason treatment runs longer than planned.
Will the aligners feel tight?
Each tray is custom-made to fit your teeth precisely, and a new set usually feels snug for the first day or two. That pressure is the aligner doing its job, and it settles quickly. If a tray feels sharp or genuinely painful rather than tight, call us.
What happens if I lose an aligner?
Call the office and we will sort out a replacement. In the meantime we will usually have you go back to your previous tray so your teeth hold their position rather than drifting while you wait.
What if my teenager forgets to wear them?
Invisalign Teen aligners have built-in compliance indicators, small blue dots that fade with wear, so you can see at a glance whether the trays have actually been in. It takes the guesswork out of the conversation.
Is Invisalign only for teenagers?
No. A large share of aligner patients are adults, including plenty who wore braces years ago and watched their teeth shift after they stopped wearing a retainer. Aligners are often the most straightforward way to correct that.
